Binary decisions feel cleaner than they are. Stay or go. Yes or no. Take it or leave it. The framing makes them seem simple, but it's the framing itself that often causes the suffering — by hiding the third and fourth options that would make the choice easier.
First: is it really two?
Before you choose between A and B, force yourself to write at least four options. Even silly ones. Often, somewhere between the obvious two, there's an option C that combines what you love about each — or an option D that makes the decision irrelevant. Most binary decisions dissolve under this question.
If it really is two: the inversion test
Imagine you've chosen option A. A week has passed. You can't undo it. What's the very first feeling that surfaces? Relief? Grief? A quiet rightness? A subtle dread?
Now do the same with option B. Don't think about it. Notice the body's first response. The mind will rationalise either way within seconds; the body's first second is usually more honest than the next ten minutes of analysis.
The "costs you'd accept" test
For each option, write the worst plausible outcome. Not catastrophe — the realistic bad case. Then ask: which set of costs would I rather live with? Hard decisions are rarely between a good and a bad. They're between two different prices, and you're choosing which one to pay.
Whose voice are you avoiding?
Each option usually has a person attached to it. A parent who would approve. A version of yourself you're trying to honour. A friend whose disappointment you can't quite face. Notice who you're choosing for, and who you're choosing against. The decision often clarifies once you see the audience you've been performing for.
If you still can't choose
Make the choice reversible. Ask: what's the smallest version of option A I could try, that would tell me whether the bigger version is right? A short visit. A trial period. One real conversation. Most binary decisions can be downgraded to experiments — and most experiments resolve themselves within a few weeks.
If you'd like a structured conversation to walk through both options out loud, Black Swan can sit with you while you do it.
